Biography

Edward Serotta is an American-born, Vienna-based photographer, filmmaker and writer who has been specializing in Jewish life in Central and Eastern Europe since the 1980s. He photographed the revolutions in Central Europe in 1989 and covered the war in Bosnia as a freelance writer and photographer. Most recently he has worked in Ukraine. Between 1991 and 1996 he published a trilogy of books on Jews in Central Europe. Between 1996 and 1999 he produced four films for ABC News Nightline in the US. Since 2000, he has been the director of Centropa.

Centropa is a Jewish historical institute that spent ten years (2000-2009) interviewing 1,200 elderly Jews in fifteen European countries. We did not use video in our interviews. We did not focus primarily on the Holocaustt. We digitized 25,000 old photographs and asked our respondents to share their stories of the entire century, just as they lived it. Centropa began working in education in 2005 and focuses primarily on Holocaust education in the lands where the Holocaust took place. Centropa employs fifteen people in its offices in Vienna, Budapest, Hamburg and Washington, DC.

<p>Since its foundation in October 2018, the Bundesverband RIAS has built up a dense reporting network for antisemitic incidents in Germany. Currently, antisemitic incidents are recorded in 11 out of 16 federal states by regionally rooted civil society entities in a standardised, category-based and GDPR-compliant manner. The Bundesverband RIAS provides the multilingual reporting page (www.report-antisemitism.de ) as well as the database software. Its team trains the employees in the civil society organisations that act as reporting centres. Bundesverband RIAS aims to - empower persons affected by antisemitic incidents by empathically assessing their experience and arranging counselling services - standardise the manner civil society organisations record and analyse antisemitic incidents by working closely with Jewish community organisation, using the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism and engaging in critical dialogue on antisemitic hate crimes with law enforcement agencies.<br /></p>

Ulrich Unseld

Biography

Ulrich Unseld studied ethnology, psychology and sociology at the University of Augsburg. He has been working at the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial for 12 years as an interface between the education department and the archives of the memorial. His responsibilities include training programs for multipliers, designing educational programs and modifying historical sources for educational work. In addition, he has long been involved with the topics of right-wing extremism and antisemitism at memorial sites and conducts research on the topic of music at Dachau Concentration Camp. Since 2018, Ulrich has also been curator of the European Holocaust Memorial in Landsberg am Lech.
